What is Dot Product?

In mathematics, you might have heard about the term ‘vectors’, it is an entity that consists of both magnitude and direction.  The technique of multiplying more than two vectors can be defined as a dot product. The resultant value of a dot product is a scalar quantity. Any quantity that is known by its magnitude or intensity is known as a scalar quantity.

For example, time, mass, temperature, volume, work, energy, and so on. This quantity of a dot product may be a positive real number or a negative real number. The application of it ranges from engineering to astronomy. In this article, we will try to cover some basic concepts regarding dot products such as dot products of two vectors, types of vectors, and do a detailed analysis about them.

Vectors And Its Types

A vector can be defined as an entity that includes both magnitude and direction. Magnitude is the amount of intensity whereas direction is the length that expresses the magnitude of a vector. Vectors are generally represented by the help of arrows, thus they include both the terminal points and initial points. The term vector has been excavated from the Latin word which basically signifies a carrier. It is used in order to express quantities such as displacement, acceleration, velocity, etc. There are numerous types of vectors that are classified on the basis of magnitude and direction. The following points mentioned below analyses the different types of vectors.

  • A type of vector that does not contain any kind of magnitude and direction is defined as the zero vector. This vector is also regarded as the additive property/identity of vectors.
  • A type of vector which has the magnitude exactly of unit 1 is known as the unit vector. This vector is generally used in order to give the direction of vectors. It is also known as the multiplicative property/identity of vectors.
  • A space having three dimensions where the direction of the vectors and position of the vector is determined that type of vector is defined as the position vector. It is also known as the vector of location or location vector.
  • Whenever the magnitude and direction of two vectors are parallel in terms of their resultant value, that type of vector is known as the equal vector. The beginning and the ending points may be a bit different, but the value must be the same.
  • A vector having the same result value of magnitude, but the directions are opposite to each other is defined as the negative vectors.
  • The opposite of the negative vector is the parallel vector. The magnitude may not be the same, but the directions must be the same.
  • If the angle between two vectors measures about 90 degrees, the vector is said to be an orthogonal vector. Two vectors starting from the same beginning or initial points are defined as the co-initial vectors.

What is the Dot Product of Two Vectors?

When the resultant value of the magnitude between two vectors is equal or the same, and the cosine angle between them is exactly similar, that phenomenon is defined as the dot products of two vectors. This may be a positive or a negative real number. It always gives a scalar quantity as, temperature, speed, volume, etc.
