Is Disney World a good place for someone in a wheelchair?
Disney World is sold as being the happiest place on earth and a place for everyone to enjoy no matter what their background. However, with a big resort with several parks would a person in a wheelchair struggle to cope with the vast amount of land in hot conditions?
Layout of the resort
Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida is one of the most spoke about places in the world but sometimes people can forget the size of the parks. With four amazing parks to explore at Disney World including the Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, EPCOT and Hollywood Studios it can be quite a tiring holiday; many say they need a holiday from the holiday!
People tend to buy park tickets for all the different parks and explore them each day of their holiday; some have even done all four in one day! However, the parks are quite close to each other and easily accessed by the various Disney transport links including the Monorail, Skyliner, ferries, bus or even hiring a taxi (outside of Disney’s control).
Can people in wheelchairs use the transport?
Yes they can. These public transport options are usually the best for people using wheelchairs because they have the appropriate steps in place for an effortless journey with Disney. One of the great things about the transport is that you do not even have to leave the chair.
Can people in wheelchairs use the rides?
One of the biggest pulls to Disney World is the rides and one the best things about these rides for people using wheelchairs is that they can ride most of them as well without leaving the seat. However, some thrill rides do require, especially in the Magic Kingdom, that you leave your chair and can either enter the ride on your own or with the assistance from another.
Disney staff will not assist but will get you as close to the ride as possible and will give you as much time as you need to access the ride.
As well as riding the ride Disney do have their Disability Access Service (DAS) in place for people who cannot wait for a long time in those queues. It does not mean you get to just ride straight away but if a queue is long you can speak to a cast member and come back at a specific time.
Can people in wheelchairs use the hotels?
No matter what hotel you stay at in the Disney Resort (many refer to it as On Site) you will find the staff are most accommodating and everything is accessible with specific rooms designed for the ease of wheelchair users and ramps in places that you need ramps.
Should a wheelchair user visit Disney World?
Of course they should. With accommodating staff, accessible rooms and paths it is possibly easier than most holidays around the world.
It is that simple really, like using forex sites, going on holiday with a wheelchair at Disney World really is accessible and one you will always remember.
